چکیده

Validity of the surface tension measurement technique that was proposed by Elleman et al. was experimentally verified. The technique was based on Brown and Scriven’s work on the shape evolution of rotating drops. Molten tin and aluminum drops were levitated in high vacuum by the electrostatic levitator and rotated by applying a rotating magnetic field. This technique offers an alternative technique for those liquids where the drop oscillation technique cannot be used. As a demonstration, the technique was applied to a glass-forming alloy (Zr41.2Ti13.8Cu12.5Ni10.0Be22.5) and its surface tension was measured down to the lower temperature where the drop oscillation technique could not be applied due to its high viscosity. © 2001 American Institute of Physics. @DOI: 10.1063/1.1388215#

Noncontact measurement of high-temperature surface tension and viscosity of bulk metallic glass-forming alloys using the drop oscillation technique

High-temperature surface tension and viscosities for five bulk metallic glass-forming alloys with widely different glass-forming abilities are measured. The measurements are carried out in a high-vacuum electrostatic levitator using the drop oscillation technique. The surface tension follows proportional mathematical addition of pure components’ surface tension except when some of the constitue...

Non-contact tape tension measurement and correlation of lateral tape motion and tape tension transients

Non-contact tension measurement of magnetic tape is performed. Light from a focussed light source is directed at a tape surface and the light reflected from the tape is captured by a photo cell. As the tape tension varies, the divergence of the reflected light bundle changes, i.e., the amount of light seen by the photo cell is a measure for the tension in the tape. Using this noncontact tension...

Direct measurement of the dispersion relation of capillary waves by laser interferometry

Surface waves on fluids with wavelengths in the millimeter range are known as capillary waves. Surface tension determines the propagation and dispersion of capillary waves while gravity plays a minor role. We describe a simple method for generating standing capillary waves of known frequency on water and introduce a novel noncontact technique based on laser interferometry to measure the wavelen...

Measurement of liquid surface properties by laser-induced surface deformation spectroscopy.

We developed a technique of picking up the liquid surface in a noncontact manner by a cw-laser radiation. The momentum change of light at the laser transmission through the air-liquid interface appears as the radiation pressure, which deforms the liquid surface into the shape determined by the balance between the Laplace force of the curved surface and the radiation pressure. The displacement o...

CFD evaluation of drop retraction methods for the measurement of interfacial tension of surfactant-laden drops.

Drop retraction methods are popular means of measuring the interfacial tension between immiscible polymers. Experiments show that two different drop retraction methods, imbedded fiber retraction (IFR) and deformed drop retraction (DDR), give inconsistent results when a surfactant is present on the surface of the drop. These inconsistencies are deemed to be due to dilution of the surfactant and ...
